Dr. Adam Aponte as New Chief Executive Officer
New York, NY – January 29th, 2024 – The East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. (Council) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Adam Aponte as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective January 5th, 2024. Dr. Aponte, a dynamic business and medical leader, brings a wealth of experience and a fervor for positive and creative change within local communities.
Having served as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) since June 2020, Dr. Aponte’s elevation to the role of CEO marks a significant step forward for the Council. His strong leadership acumen and dedication to community well-being position him as an ideal leader to guide the organization towards greater success.
A native of East Harlem, NY, Dr. Aponte is a graduate of the City College of New York and holds a medical degree and board certification in Pediatric Medicine from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Prior to joining the Council, he served as the CMO for the Division of Community Care at NYC Health and Hospitals, overseeing Health Home and Home Care Services. Dr. Aponte also held the position of Medical Director at United Healthcare Community Plan for New York State, and his contributions to healthcare extend to North General Hospital and other Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). In academia, he has made a significant impact at both Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Dr. Aponte’s professional journey has been dedicated to serving underserved and minority populations, addressing health disparities and inequities. His commitment to increasing diversity in the healthcare workforce reflects his understanding of the crucial role it plays in delivering comprehensive care.

Dr. Aponte officially assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer on January 5th, 2024, after serving as Interim CEO since October 2023. The Board of Directors invites the community and stakeholders to join them in welcoming Dr. Adam Aponte to this pivotal role, expressing their best wishes for his continued success in leading the Council toward new heights.

About East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc.- Established in April of 1965 the East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. (Council) was created through a grass roots effort by members of the East Harlem Community to address the Social and Health issues of the time. The Council operates several programs which include the Boriken Neighborhood Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center located on the corner of 123rd street and 3rd avenue. The health center provides a full array of primary and preventive care services for all ages. The Council also operates one of the City’s first Bilingual Head Start programs with two locations. In addition, the Council also operates 5 School Based Health Centers and a Senior Nutrition Program. The Council’s mission is “To offer high quality, comprehensive community-based, fully bilingual health, and human services to the residents of East Harlem, and reflect the socio-cultural fabric of El Barrio.”
